Design and Technology

Dt

Design and Technology is an inspiring, creative and practical subject. It encourages pupils to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Holme Valley Primary, we encourage pupils to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows pupils to adapt and improve their product, which is a key skill which they need throughout their life.

It is also the intent of the DT curriculum to ensure that our pupils are well-equipped with the technical knowledge they need to support them in the design and making of their product. Skills are taught progressively to ensure that prior knowledge is built upon as pupils move through the school. In addition, the school aims to develop the pupil’s use and understanding of technical vocabulary associated with this subject. This enables pupils to talk about the skills that they have applied, the equipment they have used and to describe the materials and features of the product that they have made.

If you require any further information about our design technology curriculum, please contact the school office and our subject leader will get back to you.
